Biographies
Joan Baez
Joan Baez (prononcé en français : /ʒɔn bɛz/, en anglais /d͡ʒoʊn baɪˈɛz/), née le 9 janvier 1941 à Staten Island (New York), est une autrice-compositrice-interprète américaine de musique folk.
Joan Baez est l'une des voix des années 1960 et 1970. Cette soprano, souvent surnommée « la reine du folk » ou encore « la madone des pauvres gens », impose Bob Dylan et ses chansons au public américain ainsi qu'au monde entier. Son œuvre, qui comprend de nombreuses reprises, est variée, allant des ballades anglo-irlandaises au gospel. Un de ses titres les plus connus en France est Here's to You, sorti en 1971. Très présente sur les scènes mondiales, elle participe à des événements musicaux majeurs tels que le festival de folk de Newport, le festival de Woodstock, ou encore le Live Aid de 1985.
Artiste engagée, notamment contre la guerre et l'injustice sociale, elle est amie et soutien du pasteur Martin Luther King, et multiplie les apparitions lors de manifestations ayant des revendications sociales ou pacifistes ; par exemple aux marches pour les droits civiques sur Washington, aux manifestations antiségrégationnistes de l'Alabama, ou lors de la visite de camp de prisonniers de guerre américains sous le feu des bombardements pendant la guerre du Viêt Nam.
Bill Wood (5)
Distinguished Professor of MCD Biology, Emeritus at the University of Colorado. Ph.d. Stanford U. ('64.) BS Harvard U. where he was a founding member of the folk ensemble The Raunch Hands (3) along with future U.S. Federal Reserve banker Cam Fordyce. Father of The Wood Brothers musicians Chris Wood (3) & Oliver Wood.
Ted Alevizos
Lyric tenor, folk singer, and Officer of Harvard University - Theodore (Ted) Alevizos (1926-2009) combined a classically trained voice with an inherent love of modern Greek culture.
He was born in Milwaukee, although his family originated from the southern part of Peloponnesus, Greece. Alevizos was a WWII Veteran, a musician, librarian, attorney and law professor.
