Biographie
The Golden Gate Quartet est un ensemble vocal américain de gospel et de negro spiritual.
Le Golden Gate Quartet, fondé par quatre étudiants (à Norfolk aux États-Unis) en 1934 sous le nom de Golden Gates Jubilee Singers, a été l’un des emblèmes principaux et, de par son exceptionnelle longévité, a marqué profondément la grande histoire de la musique religieuse afro-américaine.
Tout à l'origine, il est composé des chanteurs suivants et d'un jeune coiffeur (Johnny) qui se retire dès après leur premier spectacle :
William Langford, 1er ténor jusqu'en 1939
Henry Owens, 2e ténor jusqu'en 1950
Willie Johnson, baryton jusqu'en 1943
Orlandus Wilson, basse qui au départ dirige la formation.
Avec le style a cappella, il révolutionne l’univers du gospel mais aussi la société de l’époque.
