Biographie

Soft Machine était un groupe de jazz fusion britannique, pionnier de la vague psychédélique. Son nom est inspiré d'un ouvrage de William Burroughs : The Soft Machine (Olympia Press-1961).

Formé en 1966 à Canterbury, en Angleterre, par Robert Wyatt (batterie et chant), Mike Ratledge (orgue, piano), Daevid Allen (guitare) et Kevin Ayers (guitare, basse et chant), Soft Machine est devenu un groupe phare du rock psychédélique et de ce qu'on appellera plus tard l'école de Canterbury.
