Metallica est un groupe américain de heavy metal, pionnier du thrash metal, formé le 28 octobre 1981.
Metallica est l’un des groupes du Big Four of Thrash (le Big four désigne les quatre plus importants groupes de thrash metal), aux côtés de Megadeth, Slayer et Anthrax.
Le groupe a obtenu un très grand succès avec plus de 200 millions de disques vendus à travers le monde, dont 60 millions aux États-Unis. L'album Metallica (Black Album), sorti en 1991, fut vendu à plus de 30 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde7 et fut certifié 15 fois disque de platine par la RIAA.
Le groupe a reçu 9 Grammy Awards, les honneurs de MTV les intronisant « Icônes du Rock » et fait depuis 2009 partie du Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame.
En 2005 dans le magazine Forbes, Metallica est classé 23e parmi les cent célébrités les plus importantes toutes catégories confondues (show-bizz, sport, littérature). Dans l'industrie musicale, il est à la 4e place, après Madonna, Elton John et Puff Daddy.
