Biography

Grégori Czerkinsky is a French singer and musician who was born on 17 December 1959 in Algiers, Algeria.

Grégori Czerkinsky comes from a Polish family who fled the pogroms in Odessa (Ukraine).

As a young man, he began his career as a drummer in an amateur rock band before studying percussion at the Nice Conservatoire. He moved to Paris and worked as a drummer and percussionist with the Moulin Rouge Orchestra, Michel Magne, Julien Clerc, Nicole Croisille, Jean-Claude Vannier, Michel Bernholc, Taxi Girl and Lizzy Mercier Descloux. After buying his first 4-track tape recorder, he began composing and creating his own music and songs.

In 1982, he formed Mikado with the singer Pascale Borel. The band split up in 1991.

Czerkinsky resumed working on his songs as a solo artist, performing live in clubs and at private events in Paris, London, Brussels and elsewhere. In 1995, he wrote… and produced ‘Do me Do me’ for the album My First Karie by the Japanese singer Kahimi Karie. He also composed film scores, notably for Valérie Lemercier’s second feature film, Le Derrière.

His first solo album, Czerkinsky, was released in 1998. It features artwork by Stefan Czerkinsky (1951–1985). Mathieu Geoffroy-Dechaume, Pierre Mimran, Saïda Harmouz, D-Jah Mary, Power G-Riffaut, Julien Baer and Jean-Pierre Ensuque (guitarist with Autour de Lucie) took part in the recording; the album included the single ‘Natacha’, which features a sample from France Gall’s song ‘Christiansen’. The following year, he recorded the single ‘Tout baigne (dans notre amour)’ with the singer Elli Medeiros. The track features a sample from the theme tune composed by Gérard Calvi for the programme ‘Monsieur Cinéma’.

Czerkinsky’s second album, entitled Club and also featuring artwork by Stéfan Czerkinsky, is an instrumental record released in 2001.

In 2010, he contributed as a drummer and arranger to Philippe Katerine’s album and went on tour with him in 2011.

In 2012, he released the album Gregori !, followed in 2013 by the compilation Le Porquerollais, then the single T-Shirt Blanc and the EP J’aime les Animaux, and in 2015, he released his EP 1980. In 2016, he released his album, Confusion !.
