Les Garçons Bouchers
GroupBiography
Les Garçons Bouchers were a French rock band formed in 1986. Alongside Les Wampas, Ludwig von 88 and Bérurier Noir, Les Garçons Bouchers were one of the leading bands of the French alternative rock scene of the 1980s. The band split up in April 1997.
The band was originally formed in October 1985 under the name Bolchoskins, rising from the ashes of the punk-rock/oi! band Colditz. In January 1986, the band changed its name to Les Garçons bouchers.
Under the leadership of François Hadji-Lazaro, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, the band created a musical fusion of punk and ska with French folk music, particularly musette. This unique style, which blends mandolin, accordion, hurdy-gurdy and distorted guitars, gave rise to genuine punk anthems such as ‘La Bière’, as well as hits more familiar to the general public such as ‘Carnivore’, ‘Le rap des Garçons Bouchers’ and… ‘La lambada on n'aime pas ça’.
In 1990, they were signatories to the ‘“appel des 250”’, which led to the formation of the Ras l’front collective.
Early in their career, the band stood out for the minimalism of their music (using a drum machine, like Bérurier Noir) and their lyrics, characterised by schoolboy humour and dark wit (see the music video for ‘Carnivore’). They gained greater depth over the years, particularly with the arrival of singer Pierrot Sapu. Nevertheless, they never strayed from their commitment to humour, which was always intertwined with social criticism. Iconoclastic and restless, the band founded one of the most famous alternative rock labels: Boucherie Productions. In 1988, Eric Blitz left the band and was replaced by Pierrot Sapu (formerly of BB Doc / Docteur Destroy).
The band split up in April 1997. François Hadji-Lazaro carried on with Pigalle, which he had founded before Les Garçons Bouchers and which followed the same musical formula, albeit with a less punk-rock sound. Pierrot Sapu went on to become the lead singer of BB Doc before releasing his own solo album, Sapuland.
Following the death of François Hadji-Lazaro in 2023, the remaining members of the band embarked on a tribute tour. They performed at the Fête de l’Humanité in September 2023, at the Lyon Antifa Fest in 2024, and went on to play numerous concerts until 2025.
