Biography

Superpunk is a German rock and pop-punk band from Hamburg, active between 1996 and 2012. The band grew out of the Fünf Freunde to some extent, with the Bruno Ferrari Quintett being its direct predecessor. Superpunk’s musical style is a blend of northern soul, punk rock and garage rock.

Superpunk released five studio albums and one live album before releasing Oh, dieser Sound! in 2011, a tribute compilation on which artists from a wide range of genres covered Superpunk songs. Alongside Fettes Brot and Madsen, the compilation features Egotronic, Die Sterne and Andreas Dorau, amongst others.

On 10 February 2012, their label, Tapete Records, announced Superpunk’s split, as well as a final tour comprising seven club gigs. On 25 August 2012, Superpunk played their final festival gig at the Bootboohook Festival in Hanover, and on 10 September 2012 their final live concert at the Stadtsaal in Vienna, a surprise… gig organised by the radio station FM4. Carsten Friedrichs and Tim Jürgens subsequently founded Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen with other musicians.

Bassist Jan Müller (of Tocotronic) was a co-founder of Superpunk, for whom he also played guitar. Bassist Tim Jürgens is deputy editor-in-chief of the football magazine 11 Freunde.
