Back cover
Breaking away from gentrification and the gradual dumbing down of musical practice, rock music – beyond its own aesthetic virtues – acts as a remedy by striving to meet the needs of our contemporary societies. By presenting itself as a ‘stimulus for instinctual desire’, it seeks to reanimate listless, lifeless bodies in individuals confronted with the formless passage of time that is boredom. By each contributing in their own way to this cultural revolution, performers such as David Bowie, Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson reveal, through their personal experiences, the conscious and unconscious psychological mechanisms at play in their musical creation. These psychobiographical analyses also enable an exploration of the psychological processes at work in performative sublimation and in musical creation in particular.
