You are holding in your hands the second volume of *The Golden Age of British Progressive Rock 1965–1979*, which provides an alphabetical overview of the artists and bands that made up this musical movement. This second volume traces the career paths, biographies and, in most cases, detailed musical analysis of GENTLE GIANT, GONG, GREENSLADE, STEVE HACKETT, PETER HAMMILL, HAWKWIND, STEVE HILLAGE, STEVE HOWE, ILLUSION, JETHRO TULL, KHAN, KING CRIMSON, LED ZEPPELIN, MAN, MANFRED MANN’S EARTH BAND, MATCHING MOLE, THE MOODY BLUES, NATIONAL HEALTH, THE NICE and ANTHONY PHILLIPS, to name but a few of the genre’s key figures. All these artists shed a different light on British progressive rock, which gradually defined and established itself as such, with its origins dating back to the BEATLES’ album *Rubber Soul* in 1965 and culminating in the genre’s full blossoming from 1967 onwards, with the releases of *Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band* by The Beatles, *Are You Experienced?* by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, PINK FLOYD’s *The Piper at the Gates of Dawn*, THE SOFT MACHINE’s first, eponymous album, PROCOL HARUM’s first, eponymous album, and *Days of Future Passed* by THE MOODY BLUES. The period from 1970 to 1972 marked a time of rapid expansion for the genre with the emergence of EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, CURVED AIR, GENTLE GIANT, RENAISSANCE and a myriad of talented bands, though they did not achieve the same level of fame as their predecessors. The period from 1973 to 1976 is regarded as the heyday of this musical genre, with the emergence of masterpieces such as PROCOL HARUM’s *Grand Hotel*, ‘Tales from Topographic Oceans’ by YES, ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’ by GENESIS, ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ by PINK FLOYD, ‘A Passion Play’ by JETHRO TULL, ‘Brain Salad Surgery’ by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and ‘The Snow Goose’ by Camel. The period 1977–1979 was regarded as one of decline, marked on the one hand by the emergence of bands such as U.K. and BRUFORD, but also by a waning in the output of the genre’s leading figures.
