On 4 January 1967, a strange album was released. It had no title, but a surprising name for a rock band: ‘The Doors’. A giant face and three smaller men stood out against a black background, without a single smile. The track listings on the back of the sleeve read less like the ‘Top 50’ and more like the table of contents of a 19th-century English poetry collection or a medieval alchemy manual: ‘Break On Through (to the other side)’, ‘Soul Kitchen’, ‘The Crystal Ship’, ‘End Of The Night’ and ‘The End’. This record, the first of The Doors’ eight studio albums, was to launch one of the most fascinating rock bands in history, capable of fusing music and literature, genius and chaos, beauty and ugliness. This guide traces the key stages in the career of the four American musicians right up to the present day, examines each of their released albums and, above all, analyses every song performed by The Doors.
