Soul music originated in the United States in the late 1950s. It has its roots in gospel and the blues. It was Ray Charles who was the first to blend these genres to create this music of the soul – deep, sensual and, at the same time, rhythmic. It was also he who first used the term ‘Soul’ in the titles of his early albums, *Soul Brothers* in 1958 and *Soul Meeting* in 1961. It is this long and sensuous odyssey of Soul that Olivier Cachin recounts here. Through a gallery of vivid portraits of the founding fathers – Ray Charles, Otis Redding and James Brown – and their heirs – Barry White, Michael Jackson and Curtis Mayfield – right up to the genre’s current revival in the United States and Europe, he delivers a passionate history of soul music and the funk that is intrinsically linked to it. Tamla Motown, Stax Records, Blaxploitation – this book is just like soul music itself: deep, glamorous and wild! Olivier Cachin is a journalist and writer. Founder of the magazine *L’Affiche* and the television programme *Rapline* in the 1990s, he has written around ten books, including *L’offensive rap*, *Eminem: The White Prince of Hip Hop*, *100 Essential Reggae Albums*, *100 Cult Soul, Funk and R&B Albums*, as well as the biography *Michael Jackson: Pop Life*, published by Alphée Editions in 2009, which has since become a bestseller. A regular guest on television and radio, he is a recognised expert on Black music. Olivier Cachin contributes to magazines such as VSD, Rock & Folk and L’Optimum. He has been on air at Le Mouv’ (95.2) since September 2009. His programme *Collection Privée*, broadcast every Saturday from 10 am to midday, revisits popular music from the 1960s to the 2000s.
