In 1967, James Brown released ‘Cold Sweat’, a track that most historians of black music recognise as the birth of funk. He revolutionised soul by basing his music on rhythm, and his groove on the first beat of the bar – the famous ‘One’ – ushering in a new, more danceable style. Moving beyond soul, funk drew on all the dominant styles of the time and would in turn influence those that followed (hip-hop, house). Numerous musicians would contribute to its rise (Sly Stone, Funkadelic, Kool & The Gang, Stevie Wonder), its elevation to art form (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock), its growing complexity (George Clinton, Cameo) and its dominance of the charts (Michael Jackson, Prince). This anthology explores the complex world of funk and traces a history that is still being written by Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake and Daft Punk.
