The period between the release of The Beatles’ *Sgt. Pepper* (June 1967) and Yes’s *Going for the One* (July 1977) is one of the most prolific in the history of rock. During this decade, talented, educated and relatively wealthy musicians challenged the very foundations of pop music. In contrast to more protest-oriented or dance-oriented genres, they offered a more ‘progressive’, intellectual and carefully crafted style of music that quickly won over the public. Through an analysis of several key albums by bands such as the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Genesis, and by examining the historical, social and technological context, the author demonstrates how the intersections between high culture and popular culture began to take shape.
