The story of a legendary band, renowned as much for its aura and music as for its commitment to humanitarian causes. A band that was also one of the biggest rock stars of the 1990s, with global hits.
On 5 April 1980 in Athens, Georgia, a band played their first gig in a disused church, even before they’d chosen a name. The chemistry was already there, and so was the success. Hailed by the entire audience, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe decided it might be worth carrying on together beyond that one evening. A name was soon found: REM, short for Rapid Eye Movement – a phenomenon that occurs during the REM phase of sleep and allows our dreams to enter their most intense phase.
Nothing predestined R.E.M. to become one of the most influential, prolific and principled American bands of the late 20th century. From their modest post-punk beginnings to their status as a global musical phenomenon in the 1990s, the members of REM consistently exceeded the public’s expectations and defied the rules of show business.
Thirty-one years on, the band has split up, leaving behind a rich discography of 15 studio albums, including global hits such as the perfect pop song ‘Losing My Religion’ and the twilight ballad ‘Everybody Hurts’.
