A fusion of 1950s jazz, psychedelic rock and symphonic music, progressive rock is a cult genre, a niche that attracts many devotees, and it gave rise to some of the biggest names on the 1970s rock scene. Under its influence, Pink Floyd produced some of their finest albums, whilst King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Soft Machine developed unique and sophisticated sounds.
Today, rather than speaking of a ‘chapel’, we might speak of a ‘cathedral’, as the genre – which had fallen into obscurity in the 1980s – has returned to the fore, spearheaded by musicians such as Steven Wilson, Opeth and Radiohead.
In *Prog Rock: 150 Figures*, Dominique Dupuis recounts the history of more than 150 iconic musicians and bands who shaped the progressive genre. Alongside essential bands (Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake & Palmer…) this is an opportunity to discover or rediscover bands that have sometimes been forgotten (Patto, Third Ear Band, Wigwam…) as well as some notable curiosities (Forgas, Weidorje, Comus, Museo Rosenbach, Discipline…). And to explore the worlds of German rock and prog metal too....
For each of these bands, a selection of remarkable recordings has been compiled and reviewed, whilst originality and eccentricity have been key criteria in choices that are at times tinged with subjectivity…
