Back cover
Deep Purple, a multifaceted band, can be regarded as much as the pioneers of hard rock as of progressive rock. But it is as a founding band of hard rock, on a par with Led Zeppelin, that they have left their mark on pop history with two essential milestones: the album *Deep Purple in Rock*, released in 1970, and the track ‘Smoke on the Water’, a hit that every budding guitarist makes a point of playing and that every rock fan has, at least once, hummed in the street or in the shower.
This book gives pride of place to the album covers and, for each album, presents the story behind its creation and a few striking quotes spanning the entire discography of the Deep Purple universe – encompassing both the band’s albums and those by its founders through their various projects, such as Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, The Ian Dillon Band and Whitesnake, the band formed by David Coverdale.
